Choosing between plastic or paper: Environmental issues – Part 4

From time immemorial, Man has been in the midst of Nature. He has been part of Nature and is a highly evolved animal. Inquisitiveness and needs have lead Man to civilization and improved the standard of living. He has utilized the materials available in Nature to his best, to improve the quality of life. However, in the process, we have disturbed the natural events and contributed in a big way to our doom, in the form of Pollution. In recent years, Pollution has been to such an extent that it has pushed many species, including us, towards extinction. One of the most challenging pollutants posing a threat to humanity is, Plastic. It was thought as a viable alternative for Paper, but has become an evil now.

Paper though was discovered much earlier, is completely organic and made out of naturally available materials like bark of specific trees and bamboo. Of late, Bagasse (sugar cane waste) has been a very good raw material in the manufacture of paper. It has its own specialized applications. The most important usage being, writing and printing, packing etc.

One of the most intriguing innovations by human beings has been the invention of Plastic. Its application has found such a wide usage that we have replaced almost anything, with Plastic. Plastic is a Polymer manufactured by the combination of specific chemicals and has found place in the smallest of a needle to as big as aircraft parts. It is highly economical compared to other materials like Wood, Metals, Glass etc. and can easily replace all these.

Let us talk about the implications of Paper and Plastic on the environment.

Paper is a biodegradable, organic material comprising of mainly Cellulose. Its manufacture calls for the usage of a range of chemicals employed to process the raw material and remove waste, dirt and whiten the paper. Technology can eliminate the hazards during the manufacture process. The effluents from the paper mills can be effectively treated and made environment friendly before it can be released out. Since paper is an Organic material, it is absolutely harmless for the environment after it is made.

Plastic is a chemical as such, and is one material which takes more than a century to be decomposed and become part of the soil, when left in nature. It is one of the major pollutant in recent times. With several toxic chemicals, Plastic can pollute Air, Water and Soil as it is non biodegradable. Hence disposing Plastic is a challenge. Burning plastic releases more toxic gases, recycling is still more hazardous and land filling means preserving the toxins for ever. Once plastic is made, the hazard is produced along with it, whatsoever. The toxins from plastic is a big health hazard causing deadly diseases like cancer apart from a host of diseases caused indirectly. Since it is not biodegradable, plastic wastes clog drains and harbours disease causing germs and mosquitoes. Grazing cattle may accidentally consume plastic wastes along with grass and get choked causing death.

It is time now, to say a BIG NO’ to plastic and stop adding more to the woes of environment which will in turn is a threat to living beings.

The Perks of Global Warming

arya Mannes once wrote, “The earth we abuse and the living things we kill will, in the end, take their revenge; for in exploiting their presence we are diminishing our future.” Obviously Ms. Mannes preferred the status quo – health, sanity, logic, blah, blah, blah. Why? Green House Roulette is so much more intriguing.

In the country, weather affects everything. For seven years now the western half of my home state of South Dakota has been gripped by drought. Water and hay are vanishing. Farms and ranches are blowing away. While the government bails out victims from hurricanes and says, South Da-who?’ our cattle are peeing dust mites. Fortunately, things are looking up.

There is some good news. Those pesky glaciers are finally melting off! Last year an eight-nation report estimated an area of Arctic icepack the size of Texas and Kansas is gone. For those who are geographically impaired, that is an area bigger than a breadbox.

At first, news of devastating global climate change might seem a bit of a bummer. Then I read an LA Times article picked up by the local press and had a change of heart. The article began with the usual gloom. Greenland’s ice cap is melting. Our coasts will flood from rising seawater. Inuit hunters are falling through thinning ice. Melting glaciers are changing ocean temperatures and salinity contorting the jet stream, resulting in altered weather patterns worldwide. Multitudes of species are dying off . . . It was disheartening to read.

Then I arrived at the article’s final paragraph. Bam! My faith was restored. Here the Times pointed out the perks of global warming. Seriously, the article actually ended saying: “The report is not all gloomy. A warmer Arctic could increase the number of some species, such as Arctic char, a fish. It could extend the growing season for wheat in Canada and open up now-treacherous sea routes, such as the Northwest Passage and the Northern Sea Route, which parallels Russia, for shipping and resource exploration.”

Three cheers for the LA Times! It’s true! All is not gloomy. So, with that glorious bit of sunshine pumped straight up my ski bibs, I was able to see things in a whole new light. I started thinking of other advantages to global warming. Soon you will agree that people from all walks of life will benefit.

For starters, Inuit Hunters will benefit! Once Inuit have nothing left to hunt there will be no need for them to risk falling through thin ice.
